CLIMATE FUND
REALISATION
The Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) has set up a climate fund for amateur football in Germany as part of EURO2024.
Football clubs were able to apply for financial support for their climate projects in the areas of energy consumption (e.g. LED floodlights, heat pumps), water consumption (e.g. rainwater collection basins), waste management (e.g. separate waste systems) and mobility (e.g. electric minivans, charging stations for electric vehicles).
In total, UEFA has distributed over 4.9 million euros to 190 German clubs in three application phases. Each of the 21 German state associations receive an additional 100.000 euros, giving the climate fund a total volume of more than 7 million euros.
Depending on the scope of the project, the associations receive funding of up to 250.000 euros for the realisation of their proposals. The clubs themselves only have to contribute a maximum of 5.000 euros or 10% of the total project costs.
UEFA managed this fund with its own staff in order to minimise administrative costs and invest as much of the money as possible in the projects.
BACKGROUND
Sports events generate climate-relevant greenhouse gas emissions in various contexts. In addition to avoidance and reduction, climate protection projects in sport can make an important contribution to reducing CO2,, thereby contributing to climate protection.
