EUROPEAN CHAMPIONSSHIPS MUNICH 2022: ACCESSIBILITY THROUGH PARTICIPATION

REALISATION

The European Championships 2022 in Munich aimed to create an event experience that allows visitors with disabilities to participate to the greatest extent possible and raises awareness of inclusion and accessibility among all spectators.

A central aspect was the involvement of disabled sports associations, clubs, interest groups and people with disabilities in the planning and realisation of the event. The creation of a working group ensured that the needs of people with disabilities were consulted and considered from the outset, rather than simply assuming that they would not be affected.

The task force met regularly for digital meetings. They discussed the development and prioritisation of measures, the exchange of experiences and the mutual use of networks.

Creating a trusting relationship was an important criterion for success. This was achieved by making contact at an early stage and by transparent, informal communication on a equal footing.

As a result, the partners contributed numerous ideas and suggestions. They also demonstrated understanding for the limitations that the organisers were inevitably subject to when implementing ideas, such as structural limitations in the historically protected Olympic Stadium.

Thanks to this cooperation, accessibility was ultimately realised in the four areas of communication, venues, mobility and special services.

BACKGROUND

Accessibility and inclusion at public events are crucial to the equal participation of everyone. With or without restrictions – everyone should have the opportunity to enjoy events without any restrictions. This is the only way to promote diversity and strengthen cooperation.
