BEACH VOLLEYBALL MEETS EDUCATION FOR SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT: WORKSHOPS FOR SCHOOLCHILDREN AT THE "FAIR BEACH DAYS" IN HEIDELBERG

REALISATION

The North Baden Volleyball Association (NVV) set an inspiring example of combining sport and education for sustainable development at the BeachCup Heidelberg 2024. The "Fair Beach Days" were organised as part of the event with the support of a clothing brand that focuses on sustainability and funding from the Baden-Württemberg State Sports Association (LSVBW). Workshops on the subject of "Social responsibility in international supply chains" were organised for sports enthusiasts.

The workshops, led by professional volleyball players, combined sustainability topics with practical volleyball training. Pupils were actively involved and learned what sustainable action in sport can look like in concrete terms. The children’s motivation was given a further boost by handing out vests and volleyballs (for the schools), which, according to the clothing brand, are sustainably produced.

The offer was aimed at schools in the city of Heidelberg. Despite the complex communication process due to the initial lack of links between the association and the schools, the offer was fully utilised. Teachers praised the programme and emphasised that such events should take place more often in order to combine sport and awareness of sustainability.

It is uncertain whether the project will be repeated, as the high costs and personnel requirements pose some challenges. Nevertheless, the association would like to continue promoting sustainability in sport in order to sensitise young people to the topic in the long term.

BACKGROUND

Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) in the context of sporting events can teach people in a practical way how to integrate sustainable behaviour into everyday life. Sport offers an ideal platform for combining team spirit, fairness and an awareness of sustainability. Practical examples such as sustainable equipment make socio-ecological values tangible and can raise long-term awareness of sustainable thinking and behaviour.
