FOOD SHARING IN KARLSRUHE – FOOD WASTE REDUCED BY 90 PERCENT
REALISATION
“Into your stomach instead of the trash!” – this is the motto under which Karlsruher SC is campaigning against food waste. Through the collaboration between its own social umbrella brand KSC TUT GUT. and Foodsharing Karlsruhe e.V., an average of up to 275 kilograms of edible food is saved from disposal after home games and is instead delivered to people throughout the region who are in difficult life situations, are part of the Foodsharing community in Karlsruhe, or simply want to help save food. Since the concept was introduced in the second half of the 2022/2023 season, over 12 tons of leftover food has been saved from the trash after a home game day, resulting in a reduction of the ecological footprint on game days by over 30 tons of CO2-equivalents.
After the fans have left the stadium, the food leftovers are collected in the central kitchen and at a central kiosk. The parties involved (KSC, caterers, Foodsharing Karlsruhe) are then informed about the quantities of food that can be made available for collection. Around three hours after the end of the game, the food can be collected by Foodsharing members and redistributed if necessary.
BACKGROUND
Since the second half of the 2022/23 season, the club has been implementing a food sharing concept that has reduced food waste from the spectator and hospitality areas of its own stadium by around 90%. In addition, KSC was awarded the “Ray of Hope of the Year 2023” for its food sharing concept.
The success of the initiative is also due to the commitment of those involved, who are all willing to take on one or two extra steps. This applies, for example, to sorting food.

CHALLENGES
- During the development of the concept, those responsible also dealt with the legal pitfalls
- In particular, the strict hygiene requirements in the food sector and
- the question of liability in the event of transmission pose a major hurdle for many clubs, caterers, and restaurants
