REALISATION
The kids' marathon has been an integral part of the Metropolmarathon in Fürth since 2009. Up to 4.000 children aged between 1 and 16 can run age-appropriate distances around the Fürther Freiheit every year. In order to enable children from low-income families to participate, a social fund was set up in 2010 under the motto “Leave no child behind”.
The social fund finances the starting slots for children from socially disadvantaged families in the city and district of Fürth. The fund is set up and financed by local bank branches and private companies. With their commitment, they help to ensure that every child has the chance to take part in the marathon.
Registration with the social fund is unbureaucratic and can be easily done at local day-care centres and schools. Educators and teachers indicate how many children will make use of the fund. This practice ensures that enrolment takes place directly and without complicated bureaucracy, as the professionals know the children's circumstances best.
Since 2024, however, there have been challenges due to the introduction of an online registration process. The number of children using the social fund must now be agreed in advance with the organiser, so that the children receive a voucher code with which the entry fee is waived when they register. Despite the time pressure due to the limited number of participants, all children were able to take part. The process between the event organisers and the technical service provider is to be further optimised in the coming years.
BACKGROUND
The participation of people from low-income families in sporting events is crucial to promoting equal opportunities and breaking down social barriers. Sport strengthens community, health and self-confidence. When financial barriers prevent access, many people miss out on the opportunity to benefit from these advantages. That is why sporting events must be accessible to everyone.
