GENERALI BERLIN HALF MARATHON - RESOURCE CYCLE OF THERMAL FOILS

REALISATION

Once they have crossed the finish line, runners will be given a thermal foil to prevent them from getting cold. Participants are sensisted to only use them when there is an actual need.

With the help of volunteers marked with a flag backpack, the distributed thermal foils were collected by the organisers and pressed into bales using a baler provided by the local waste management company, a long-standing partner of the organisers. This allowed them to be returned to the manufacturer when the event was over.

The recovered raw material is used to produce new thermal films. These have not been branded for a specific year, so that unused thermal foils can be used for future events.
Participants' awareness was raised before the event through a call to action on the website and in newsletters and on social media. There were signs in German and English at the site indicating the collection. Volunteers from the association also worked hard to collect thermal foil from the ground and even from litter bins.

BACKGROUND

Consumption and production must remain within planetary ecological limits. The circular economy, sustainable supply chains and the avoidance and responsible disposal of waste are important here. As part of sporting events, products such as thermal foils are produced for single use.

CHALLENGES

  • Raising awareness among participants not to take the thermal foils home with them as souvenirs
  • Raising awareness among participants to hand in used thermal foils at the baler or to volunteers, and not to throw them into waste bins
