SPORTS FESTIVALS IN UNIVERSITY SPORTS - UNIVERSITY OF KONSTANZ

REALISATION

University Sport Konstanz has organised a major sports festival almost every year since 2006. In 2024, it hosted around 800 participants and visitors. The "greenANDclean" concept avoids refuse and food waste.

Breakfast is served on "real" plates and in "real" cups, which are then washed by student services and used in the canteen.

All catering partners use reusable systems or compostable containers, helping to avoid waste from disposable packaging. Products made from disposable plastic are not used and degradable alternatives are used where reusable systems are not possible.

Since 2017, increasing attention has been paid to regional and/or organic catering companies and greater emphasis has been placed on vegan and vegetarian options. In order to counteract food waste, early registration is requested, especially with regard to catering.

In 2024, for the first time, even more attention was paid to waste separation in order to recycle unavoidable waste.

BACKGROUND

Sporting events generate waste in various contexts, which must be prevented and reduced. Reusable systems are one solution, compostable products are an alternative. Unavoidable waste is separated more consistently and recycled.

CHALLENGES

Achieving student-friendly pricing and both good and sustainable catering is not easy. Understanding and commitment are needed from all stakeholders to make sustainable concepts a reality in the long term.
