REUSABLE TRANSPORT CRATES

REALISATION

For over three years, Eintracht Frankfurt has been using reusable plastic transport crates to deliver its fan merchandise. The plastic boxes are used to transport fan merchandise from the logistics provider to the various fan shops and the club's offices. The drivers take them back with them on their next trip.

In the first step, the multiple use of cardboard boxes was tested with a maximum of three cycles. In the next stage, hard boxes were introduced, which increased the number of usage cycles. After a test phase, a specific plastic transport box system was selected and successfully introduced.

The changeover not only saved more than 10,000 kilograms of cardboard per year in the logistics of fan merchandise, but also reduced storage space for cardboard waste in the fan shops and saved costs: after just one season, the investment in reusable transport crates had already paid for itself. Thus, the switch to reusable transport crates is considered a success by all parties involved.

BACKGROUND

Large quantities of cardboard waste and limited storage space in fan shops led to considerations about reducing the amount of waste generated by fan merchandise logistics. In 2021, the managers of the Bundesliga soccer club decided to stop using disposable cardboard boxes and have since been relying on the environmentally friendly use of reusable plastic transport crates for the delivery of their fan merchandise.
