REALISATION
Right from the start of the planning phase, it was envisaged that no new buildings would be constructed, no surfaces sealed and no new stadiums built. Instead, numerous sports facilities from the 1972 Olympic Games were used as venues.
The Olympic Park with its stadium and hall was the main venue for athletics and gymnastics. Other competitions took place in the outdoor area of the Olympic Park and the Olympic Regatta Centre in Oberschleißheim.
The old architecture did not fulfil the accessibility requirements everywhere, and the preservation order often ruled out a conversion. Together with those affected (see Good Practice Accessibility) [eventuell Link setzen], solutions were developed and temporary ramps were installed, for example. Where this was not possible and the number of people affected was small, individual solutions were sought.
Some sports facilities were renovated and modernised in the run-up to the European Championships independently of the event. Close coordination was required due to the deadlines.
BACKGROUND
Land sealing, new buildings and the so-called white elephants, i.e. oversized competition venues built exclusively for masses of visitors to mega-events and without after-use concepts, have a profound ecological and economic impact on sporting events.

CHALLENGES
- Some of the sports facilities had to be partially renovated.
- Historic building regulations had to be observed.
- Compatibility of the existing sports facilities with the rules of the international sports federations
- Completion of the event-independent refurbishment measures
