WASTE
WHAT IS BEHIND THE WASTE ACTION AREA?
Minimise waste and enable recycling: Every sporting event leaves behind large amounts of waste. Some of it is generated by visitors, but large quantities of waste are produced mainly in the backstage areas of kitchens, kiosks, media centres and during the set-up and dismantling of sporting events. Proper waste management is a core concern of every sporting event, as cleanliness is the most visible sign of a functioning environmental concept and represents the interface between sustainability and the visitor. Littering, on the other hand, is at odds with cleanliness and effective waste management.
TARGETS AND SUB-TARGETS
- The amount of waste generated during the sporting event is minimised to X kg per capita in all areas.
- The amount of waste is minimised during the construction and dismantling phases and collected separately.
- X percent of drinks are served in returnable systems.
- X percent of beverages are delivered in returnable systems.
- X percent of food is served in reusable systems or with paper napkins and in paper bags.
- By collecting waste fractions separately, X percent of potential waste is to be recycled.
- Littering is avoided in all areas, whether in nature and the countryside or in urban areas.
Littering is avoided in all areas, whether in nature and the countryside or in urban areas.
- Make all relevant stakeholders (e.g. organisation team, athletes, visitors) aware of waste avoidance, waste separation and the correct handling of waste and motivate them to behave sustainably.
FURTHER TARGETS
Action areas serve to divide up the complex topic of sustainability for operationalisation. However, there are many overlaps between the fields of action. For example, although the following objectives belong to the topic of waste, they are dealt with in detail in other action areas.

Recycle as many materials as possible after use. → Click here to discover the Ressource Cycle action area
LINKED SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT GOALS
The Waste action area addresses the following sustainable development goals from the United Nations 2030 Agenda.
