TRANSFORMATION AREA OF PEOPLE/SOCIETY

Sporting events strengthen social cohesion, participation and a sense of community, and enable participation and lifelong learning through voluntary work. They promote (inter)cultural and international exchange and can be drivers of diversity. By promoting exercise, they support a healthy lifestyle and human well-being. Sporting events should utilise these opportunities for people and society.
At the same time, possible negative effects of sporting events must neither be trivialised nor overlooked in planning. This can be seen in the way human rights violations have been addressed in the preparation and running of major sporting events in recent years. It is not enough to simply look abroad: Inadequate working conditions can also occur in event-related industries such as cleaning, construction, security and catering in Germany, not to mention the problems in the supply chains. There is also sexualised violence, racism and discrimination in German sport. Sports events must therefore identify and prioritise such human rights risks, take preventive measures and, in specific cases, ensure that remedial action is taken and, if necessary, compensation is provided.
PRINCIPLES
These fundamentals of successful transformation must be part of the approach to sporting events.
In order to respect human rights, the human rights risks associated with the sporting event must be identified and adequately managed.
The well-being of all is at the centre of sustainable development. This also includes the participation of people from all dimensions of diversity in social life.
An appropriate culture of dialogue with all relevant stakeholders (i.e. interest groups) is essential.
Active sport, passive communal sporting activities and voluntary commitment contribute to health, happiness and quality of life, which strengthens the sustainable development of society.
ESD plays a key role in anchoring sustainability in people's consciousness. With their reach, sporting events are an ideal platform for promoting sustainable thinking and action through ESD.
Sport can contribute to positive changes in society through participation, team spirit and prevention of discrimination.
