RESOURCES TRANSFORMATION AREA

Resource conservation and circular economy, i.e. reusing raw materials, aim to utilise resources sustainably, use them efficiently and ensure their availability for future generations. At sporting events, this is achieved through sustainable construction and operation, waste avoidance (including food), the reduction of resource requirements, the efficient use of resources and sustainable consumption. Circular economy promotes a longer and more intensive use of products. This also includes sustainable, exercise-oriented urban development, including the promotion of cycling.
PRINCIPLES
The need for new resources is minimised by reducing material consumption and reusing materials at the sporting event (e.g. reusable tableware, temporary grandstands).
Circular economy is promoted through responsible procurement practices. This also includes the integration of ecological, social and economic criteria. The focus is on environmentally friendly materials, social responsibility in the supply chain, supporting the local economy and reducing waste. This also includes the procurement of food for a sportig event, taking into account environmental and climate protection (e.g. products from the region), animal welfare (e.g. organic products) and producer rights. The organiser should give preference to renting and buying second-hand ecologically sound products – based on a holistic life cycle analysis – over new purchases.
The entire life cycle of products – from design and production to utilisation, reuse and recycling through to disposal and returning materials to the cycle – is taken into account at sporting events. The use of resources is handled responsibly by the organiser by purchasing durable products, repairing and reusing them, using reusable packaging and similar measures for waste avoidance, efficient recycling and the creation of a closed cycle.
The integration of energy efficiency, climate neutrality, biodiversity conservation, resource conservation, the use of renewable raw materials, space reduction and sustainable procurement is crucial for the construction, modernisation and use of sporting event venues.
